Jelenia Gora, Poland

900th Anniversary Celebration

Tyler’s Sister City of Jelenia Gora, Poland, celebrated their 900th Anniversary September 6 and their Sister Cities across the globe were invited to attend. Our Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass was made an honorary citizen along with other recognized dignitaries. Unfortunately, with the invitation to participate arrived in late August, Tyler Sister Cities was unable to participate or travel to the community.

We are looking forward to other opportunities to connect with our Polish friends in Jelenia Gora –a friendship that dates to 1996 when the group of 20 men and women of Jelenia Gora traveled to Tyler as guests of The University of Texas at Tyler through then President George Hamm, and participated in studying city government, schools, judicial operations and economic adventures.

At that time, Jelenia Gora was emerging from a long period of Communist domination. Since then, delegations of Jelenia Gora citizens and Tyler Sister Cities have exchanged visits, most recently in 2006, when a delegation of 8 from Tyler visited Jelenia Gora, took part in a symposium of university and polytechnic higher education facilities regarding student exchanges.

Can this be a recognition of their invitation and acknowledgement?

The Wojanowska Gate and the tower at St. Anne’s Chapel are sights found in Jelenia Gora’s city center on the way to the town square.

This ornate lecture hall in the former Schaffgotsch Palace in the Cieplice spa district has been used by the local branch campus of the Technical University of Wroclaw since it opened in the palace in 1975.

The Chojnik Castle Hill is south of Cieplice. The castle dates back to the 1300’s.
